YAY! I Got an Email from Fred Alan Wolf!
I think it is *so* cool when famous people answer email of their fans. First Bear, now Fred.
Fred Alan Wolf, for those of you googling is the Einstein haired guy in the movie “What the Bleep Do We Know?!”
I asked him, after reading the new National Geographic article “The God Particle” why the CERN laboratory that is made for searching for tiny little things like…particles needed to be 17 miles in diameter.
His reply:
Detection of matter depends on the scale one uses. To detect an
object with a mass of one kilogram on the scale of centimeters is not hard
but to detect the Higgs Boson on a scale inside the nucleus is another thing
entirely. You need to hurl particles together with great velocity in order
to get them to penetrate down to that desired distance and for that you need
a lot of acceleration such as the circular LHC track at CERN.Best Wishes,
Fred Alan Wolf Ph.D.

I love the *Have Brains/ Will Travel* part.
