Getting My Ducks in a Row
Filed under FooJul 22I had lunch with a friend today, and she asked me,”So….how do you keep yourself busy these days?”
Well, that’s an interesting question. For the past few days I’ve been looking at issues I’ve not wanted to deal with and facing them head on. Here’s the list.
Email
Believe it or not, this was one of the larger tasks. For *years* I’ve had 2 different email accounts, one that was online (yahoo) and another that was popped to my mailbox on my home computer. And, for *years* I have been ignoring the one at home. It was just too much to come home and deal with my email separately from my online account — not to mention the fact that my home account was getting spammed to death. I’ve had people email me constantly for more than 10 years and I’ve never answered them. OK..maybe a few emails, but really, I could count those emails on one hand. I don’t know why those people still call me a friend. Hell, I can’t even believe they remember my name. So, I found that with google’s gmail, I can put my personal domain host online. What a relief. Now, I can have my personal domain email address accessible everywhere and I don’t have to use up space on my hard drive for emails. And I’ve got to admit, google’s spam filter is pretty good too, so now all I’m getting is stuff I want. (I’ve also been opting out of the email newsletters that I’ve opted into over the years. This will take a while, but I’m slowly chipping away at it.) I’ve also not forwarded my email address to people who just forward jokes to me. Sorry. I just don’t have time for it, so they will keep my “old” online email address that I will check maybe once a month. Maybe.
Money Savings Management
Here’s another thing I’ve been ignoring for years: money. I’ve been saving, but I’ve got accounts everywhere with several different investment firms. No longer. I’ve combined all of those into one firm with an online presence who knows that I hate hate HATE paper. (I’ve also told them that I really hate email newsletters, as well.)Divorce
Finally. I’ve been waiting for the ex to do this because I felt like I spent all of my years in the marriage trying to save the marriage that I wanted HIM to be the one to break it. I’m over that, and ready to move on. I went to the LegalZoom website and filled out the paperwork. In 5 to 7 days I’ll get it back and will be able to take it the courthouse and file.Web Sites
I’ve got several domains with some information on them that have been ripening in google for a couple of years. With a little work and input, I should be able to have them at least pay for themselves. I’ve been updating everything to a WordPress CMS backend and writing content. I always like the idea of having more than one source of income, so this little side venture should prove fruitful.Progress and Aftermath
I have to tell you, I’ve not felt so much relief in a long while. I’ve gotten back in touch with friends I’ve not talked to for many years. I’ve come to realize how much of myself I’ve lost by not getting my shit together. My head feels clearer than it has in a long time, and I feel like I’ve turned a page in my life. For the better.
